About Me

Who Am I?

Hi I'm Samuel Doogan. I studied Computer Science in University College Dublin, where I recieved a first class honours. I then went on to recieve a grant for a research masters from ADAPT. My research was in the area of Computational linguistics, and focused on the use of humour in natural language. I sought to improve our understanding of this phenonmenon, both scientifically and computationally.

Having just completed my Master's Thesis, I'm eager to begin working and employ the many things I have learned in the world of academia to real life problems.

What I do?

Here are some of my expertise

Problem Solving

Working as a Tutor and Teaching Assitant I am well versed in thinking on my toes and having to deal with a number of different and contrasting problems.

Software Development

A considerable part of my research Master's invovled coding an experimental System which subsquently achieved state of the art levels of accuracy in its domain.

Machine Learning

Dealing with language within a computational framework, good knowledge Machine Learning technologies such as Neural Networks, Decision Trees, Language Models, etc. are all of vital importance.

Linguistics

This being other half of my research, I am well versed in current Linguistic theories, particularly with regards to humour and linguistic creativity.

Language and Communication

Being a T.A, I have had to work hard on effective communication. I've also written articles and theses, which have granted me some skill in the area language composition. I am also fluent in English and French.

Code Review

Another important aspect of being a Teaching Assitant was correcting coding assignments. Over the years I have seen quite a lot of different levels of code, and have improved on my ability to assess good and bad code.

My Skills

A visual estimate of some of the skills I posess. I realise that this a difficult thing to measure and the numbers don't really mean a lot, but it's pretty to look at!

Education

My research Master’s thesis is in the field of Computational Linguistics and is entitled “Idiom Savant: The Automatic Detection, Location and Translation of English Puns”.

It discusses a system I developed which deals with the computational treatment and classification of written wordplay. The system achieves state of the art precision for the binary classification of heterographic puns.

Graduated with first class honours. Received an A grade on my final year project which subsequently led me to be enrolled in and funded for my Master’s degree in computational linguistics.

Completed my Leaving Certificate in 2012 with a total of 520 points.

Experience

Work Experience

University College Dublin Computer Science Tutor

2018-Present

Working specifically with the Computer Science Support Centre. During my time there I met all kinds of problems from different Computational Fields. The centre frequently has many students dropping in, which requires quick problem solving and a broad knowledge base to deal with technical difficulties, and clear conceptual understandings for teaching.

University College Dublin Teaching Assistant

2017-2018

Teaching assistant for various modules in the school of computer science, including Data Science in Python, Program Construction I & II, and OOP in Python. My main role was to act as an intermediary between the students and demonstrators, and the module coordinator. This involved organising the moodle/brightspace, setting the relevant material online and dealing with the majority of email-based queries. As T.A. I was also required to have extensive knowledge of the relevant subjects.

University College Dublin Senior Demonstrator

2016-2017

Demonstrating different Computer Science modules, which mostly involved answering student queries and helping students with their practical assignments.

University College Dublin Junior Demonstrator

2015-2016

Began in my final year of undergraduate studies. I went on to become a senior demonstrator through positive student feedback.

Crowbar, Button Factory, Dublin Sound Engineer

2018-Present

As live sound engineer for Crowbar I am responsible for how the live acts sound both to the audience and to themselves. I'm Familiar with an assortment of analogue musical equipment to cater for an eclectic mix of live acts.
